The Assessment of the Nasopharyngeal Soft Tissue of Normal Korean on the Lateral Neck Radiograph

Abstract
Radioraphy of the nasopharynx is a routine procedure for the evaluation of the nasopharyngeal soft tissue changes. The value of the lateral neck radiography in the detection of tumors of the nasopharynx has been well recognized ever since the
early
1930s.
To establish the constitution of a normal amount of nasopharyngeal soft tissue, as viewed on a lateral rediograph of the neck, we have made measurements of various nasopharyngeal soft tissue thicknesses in 214 Koreans (109 males and 105 females).
We measured four sagittal diameters about the soft tissue of the nasopharynx, namely, the roof thickness [thickness of the soft tissue at the level that is 2 cm to the basion anteriorly perpendicular to the basisphenoid] ; the posterior wall
thickness
[thickness of the soft tissue along a linel which extends from the basion to the posterior edge of the hard palate] ; the C1-postpharyngeal space[thickness of the soft tissue in front of the most anterior portion of the anterior arch of the
atlas]
: the
C2-postpharyngeal space [thickness of the soft tissue in front of the most prominent point of the body of the axis].
@ES The results were as follows :
@EN 1. The roof thickness was 11.0¡¾2.1 mm in male and 9.6¡¾2.0 mm in female with the normal range being 6 mm-16 mm in male and 5 mm-14 mm in female.
2. The posterior wall thickness was 20.5¡¾2.9 m in male and 19.0¡¾2.7 mm in female with the normal range being 14 mm-27 mm in male and 13 mm in female.
3. The C1-postpharyngeal space was 41.¡¾1.8 mm in male and 3.8¡¾1.2 mm in female with the normal range being 2 mm-8 mm and 1 mm-7 mm in female.
4. The Cs-postpharyngeal space was 3.7¡¾1.3 mm in male and 3.3¡¾1.1 mm in female with the normal range being 1 mm-7 mm in male and 1 mm-6 mm in female.
Generally, the measurements in male were slightly greater than those of females and the thickness is slightly decreased with age in both sexes. The roof thickness is alwavs less than the posterior wall thickness and the soft tissue outline is
typically
smooth and concave.
The comparison of our findings with other authors, revealed no significant difference.
